Big sigh of relief

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

I did it. It is over. I have finished my first two semesters of grad school. The past three weeks have not been fun; in fact, I’ve been pretty stressed. But today I turned in my labs, which was the last item on my "to do" list.
I sat by the pool and read a book for fun (The Time Traveler’s Wife) this afternoon. I don’t remember the last time I got to be outside or the last time I read a novel…it was amazing. My roommate is going to be gone for a couple of days so I have the house to myself. :) Plans include: cleaning the apartment, getting rid of all the crap in my closet, start packing, and a trip to Ikea. Right now, I’m sitting on my couch, watching TV. And breathing a big sigh of relief.

So close!

I think I can…I think I can…I think I can

countdown until school is over for the semester:
–last day of class is tomorrow! yay for my last 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. day (hopefully it will never happen again)!!
–will finally do stupid auditory training project at the elementary school, then write a quick summary of it and perhaps after that I’ll have enough info to finish the 3-4 page paper that compares my school visit to what we’ve "learned" in class
–Tuesday morning will complete my last Cokely project…going to a retirement home and discussing "how to cope with hearing loss"
–last final is on Wednesday afternoon; we’ll see what Thib pulls out of thin air for this one. Last week she gave us some practice question and I kid you not, said "I’m looking for one more thing for this question. I didn’t teach it to you and I just learned about it last week at convention, which none of you were at, but you’ll be responsible for it on the test. Can anyone take a guess?" grr

But then: freedom! well, almost. Still have to go to work and pack up the apartment and move. eek!

Saturday Day o’ Studying

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

okay friends and other random people who read my blog (if there are such people), it’s been a while since I’ve posted and I’m supposed to be studying (which of course means I’m trying to procrastinate) so here’s an update on the crazy end of semester mess of projects:
–called/emailed the museums and turned in my ranking of them (FW Museum of Science and History had the best accommodations if y’all were wondering)
–finished and turned in 2 page literature review
–tutorial finished and turned in (complete with cheesy video of Greg and me demonstrating how to connect an FM transmitter to the audio jack of the computer)
–made up the evidence based practice power point (still don’t really know what EBP is but oh well)
–have not observed Plano deaf-ed class but think I have found a time to do so
–think we’ve finally gotten through to our prof that the 4 auditory training sessions wasn’t going to happen so can combine doing one session with the same trip as stated above BUT I have done the goals/objectives/activities which are due on Monday
–still need to finish labs; Reagan and I spent 3 and 1/2 hours yesterday doing sections A-J from one lab just on Reagan as a subject (but I got to hook electrodes on her head and read out her brainstem responses–it was pretty cool for the first 30 minutes or so, then I just wanted to go home). These might take a while.
–have a date for when I’m going to the retirement home (there is a difference you know) and have the people who are doing the presentation with me figured out
–studying for one final this weekend and the other next weekend

then school will be over for 2 weeks, I’ll have to pack up my apartment and move to new apartment (super excited about that), then unpack new apartment, and summer school will start.
Last night the Midnight Movie Club went to see Young Frankenstein. Classic.
Next week is Singin’ in the Rain :) something to look forward to and get me through the week.
okay really must go study now.
p.s. sorry for the now extremely annoying ads. don’t know what friendster is doing but I may have to change to a new blog site because it’s driving me crazy! just mute your volume while you read…it’s what I had to do to post

there’s not enough time."

I like my little life. I believe I’ve mentioned this before. School takes up most of my time but, for most of the time, I don’t mind this. This is not so at the end of the semester. I have 3 weeks before finals week. And in these next 4 weeks I have to (start and) finish the following:

–call 10 museums in the area to inquire about their accommodations for people with hearing loss and then rank them
–write a "literature review" on whether adult aural rehabilitation is beneficial (don’t really know what the heck that means but it’s not looking good seeing as how the literature basically says there is no evidence to support either side)
–make up a tutorial for parents/teachers on how to interface FM systems with different types of equipment
–make up an "evidence-based" practice power point (again, not really sure what that is supposed to mean but it’s the big catch-phrase now-a-days)
–observe a deaf-ed class in Plano
–return to said deaf-ed class in Plano four times to do auditory training therapy with a child (I should probably mention here that our prof has not explained auditory training yet and I have no available time during the children’s school day to do this project and I chose audiology so I wouldn’t have to do this type of therapy because I don’t like doing this type of therapy) and turn in all the paper work with the goals and objectives and all of that
–finish my the labs from the entire semester (still waiting on our lab instructor to tell us what we need to turn in)
–go to an assisted living home and give a presentation on working with people who have hearing loss
–study for 2 finals (at least I only have 2, right?)

Could I have started on any of these earlier in the semester, you ask? In truth, yes. But honestly there are only two projects (accommodations and evidence based practice for those who want to know) which could have been started prior to this week. It will all get done because it has to and I’m not one to just not finish my work. I only mention this to a) complain a little bit and b) let you know that I will be very busy and might not be around much. Yay for school. Thinking positively–I get student discounts for the next four years. :)
