My Weekend

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

This has turned out to be a really good weekend, considering that I kicked it off by going to a funeral. I guess I should address that first: one of the clinical supervisors at school, Mrs. MacArthur, lost her husband last weekend, very suddenly. Friday afternoon was the funeral and many of my classmates and professors attended to support Mrs. MacArthur during this grievous time. The service was really wonderful and I am glad that I attended.
Friday night, I drove to Fort Worth (my favorite place in the metroplex) to see one of my favorite people, Becky. We had dinner and just got to catch up–which was great. I love my Fort Worth friends and really miss them. Mary went home, so I didn’t get to see my other favorite FW friend but that will be remedied soon (hopefully).
Saturday was one of the best days of the past month. I slept in until 9 (amazing!) and went over to Amy’s in my pj’s and proceeded to watch movies for the next 15 hours. That’s right, I said 15 HOURS!! I got home around 3 in the morning but it was a great day. I stayed on the couch, curled up in a blanket, while it rained all day. It was fabulous!
This morning I got up for early church (not gonna lie, it was hard to get up), then went to the special needs classroom to volunteer. Oh goodness. I loved it but it was chaos. I’m really excited about working with these 6 kiddos and volunteering at a church that I’ve come to love.
Well, I was all ready for a nap after my late night and packed morning, but I had signed up to babysit for 2 hours during a parent support group at school this afternoon. So I drove up to Callier and ran around some more, but this time with a bunch of kids who had cochlear implants and hearing aids. Cutest thing ever: a little 4-year old, bilaterally implanted girl (meaning: she has cochlear implants on both sides, specifically med el implants) had her baby doll and her mom had glued foam cut-outs of implants on the baby doll!!
I got back to the apartment around 4ish and then took my nap. Ah. I think napping is one of my favorite things. Since then I’ve been sitting in my recliner, watching TV (Grey’s Anatomy–oh how you tug on my emotions) and sort of working on school stuff during the commercials. And by "sort of" I mean I’ve done a total of maybe 15 minutes worth of work. :) I might regret it later in the week, but this weekend has ruled!

for those of you who are interested, there are 2 other cochlear implant companies: Cochlear Corp., and Advanced Bionics. I like to inform pretty much anyone who will listen about audiological stuff.

The Rum Story

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Okay so there has been a lot of build-up for the rum story. I feel as though many will be disappointed when they read it. Here goes:

I was going to Jamie’s for V-day, about to leave my apartment when she called asking for a favor. She was planning on making mojitos but couldn’t go buy the rum because Amy was waiting at Jamie’s apartment and would I please please please pick it up for her. I was on my way out to go get the goodies for my s’more maker (that’s right, I said s’more maker) so I asked what kind of rum to buy and if I could buy it at a Tom Thumb. Nope, Tom Thumb does not sell rum so I would have to find a liquor store. I live close to Greenville Ave and for those who are familiar with Dallas you would think that means I would know where there is a liquor store. I do now, but I didn’t a week ago. If you want a good example for the cliche "fish out of water" then picture me in a liquor store trying to find the rum ("but why is the rum gone?" name the movie). I’ve only been in a liquor store once WITH MY PARENTS two Christmases ago to buy schnapps. What can I say? I was a really good kid. So I find the bottle of rum ($12!!) and go to check out. They don’t even ID me! But my card won’t go through. Haven’t I been through enough already?! I feel super out of place here; it took me forever to find the rum section; and now my card won’t work. The guy at the check-out tells me that the register doesn’t like debit cards for some reason but he can slide it again as a credit card–at least I think that’s what he said; he had an incredibly thick Scottish accent (fun to listen to but hard to understand). It works; I go to Jamie’s and save the day with the rum.

That’s the rum story. I hope it lived up to the hype.

p.s. for those who have been waiting: I told the roommate I’m not living with her after May! eek!

Really fast….cause I have to go watch Lost

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

AAHH! I’ve discovered school has ups and downs; it goes in cycles. Everything is fine for a while, nothing too important is going on and nothing major is due then all of a sudden EVERYTHING hits the fan. Julia goes in to psycho-crazy-busy-school mode and becomes very focused and introverted (and to be honest, not very nice to roommate’s whose idiosyncrasies really become annoying during this time period). Fortunately, I am coming down from crazy-Julia-school mode and by this weekend will be completely in life is groovy mode. Right now I’m exhausted all the time and my body is trying to adjust to getting sleep on a normal basis, which for some reason makes me feel even more tired than when I was staying up super late and getting up ridiculously early. Why is that? Okay enough for now; DVR has finished taping Lost so I can go watch it and fast forward through the commercials–that’s my favorite part!
Future posts will include my love for Amazon and my Valentine’s adventure of buying rum (if for some reason my mother is reading this, just ignore that last sentence)

Midnight Madness

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Yesterday was a GRRRRREAT Friday. We got out of lab early; Becky came to Dallas, we rented a movie and ordered pizza; then I met two of my school friends (the two who enjoy Monty Python as much as I do) for a midnight showing of "And now for something completely different." All of that= a great day! But waking up this morning was not so great. :) I guess I’m just not in college mode anymore–can’t stay up super late and then be able to function before noon the next day.
